About Ettayapuram
Ettayapuram is a small town in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. The place is hailed as the birthplace of renowned Tamil poets Umrai Pulavar and Bharathiar. Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the triad of Carnatic music also spent few years of his life and was patronized by the ruler of Ettayapuram. According to the census of 2011, the population of the town was 12800. Tamil is the official language of the town.
Geography of Ettayapuram
The town is positioned at 9.1500 degrees in North and 77.9833 degrees in the East. The avg. elevation of the town is 200 feet or 60 meter. Ettayapuram climate is classified as tropical. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. The average annual temperature remains 29.2 °C while precipitation here averages 621 mm. Black soil which is used to cultivate sunflower, cumbu, cotton, kezhvaragu and cholam is found in this part of Tamil Nadu.History of Ettayapuram
Ettayapuram was once known as Ilasanadu and the Pandya rulers governed it. After the reign of Pandyas, the Madurai Nayak Empire gave the title of Zamindar to Ettappan who was supervised by the Vijaynagar Dynasty. For about 150 years the town was ruled by the successors of Ettappan and in the year 1565 the Ilasanadu town finally became Ettayapuram.
Ettayapuram was once known as Ilasanadu and was ruled by the Pandya Kings. The town gained its namer from its Zamindar Ettappan who was appointed by Madurai Nayak dynasty under the supervision of Vijayanagara empire. After 150 years of rule by the descendants of Ettappan, Ilasanadu became Ettayapuram in 1565. Ettayapuram estate flourished under Raja Jagavira Rama Kumara Ettappa Nayaker Aiyan and his Diwan Ranganadha Chettiar.
Economy of Ettayapuram
The inhabitants of the town mainly keep themselves busy with agriculture, weaving work and manufacturing of matches. The conventional weavers use handlooms to knit cotton yarn. There are small companies who run power looms as well as similar businesses of manufacturing threads for dyeing and weaving. Besides weaving the other main industry is manufacture of matchsticks & match boxes. The land which is used for agricultural purposes has declined because of infertile soil and lack of rains. A special breed of goats called –“ Kanni” is reared here for meat. This variety is popular in this area because of its drought resistance power.Tourism in Ettayapuram
